Displaced older siblings will readily identify with Plum’s fears about losing her spot as her family’s ‘Special One,’ and the dog’s emotions are plainly apparent in Clark’s watercolor-and-pencil artwork. The book would appeal most to those who are from the Midwest or have a loved one that is originally from the Midwest however, anyone reading this can easily relate to the mean neighbor down the street, the bully, or the mentor that made all the difference. Although she is highly critical of practices often found in children's ministry, she explains the problems and describes realistic alternatives, many of which have been successfully implemented.
